Natural England - Licence Natural England-owned information for commercial use

Licence Natural England-owned information for commercial use

Natural England owns a large collection of information: reports, technical information notes, databases, images and geographical information system (GIS) datasets.

Much of this is detailed in our Publications Catalogueexternal link, or through the MAGIC websiteexternal link. However, only the most frequently requested items are listed here, so if you think we might have anything else of use to you, please contact our Enquiry Service who will refer you to the correct specialist.

Using our data and information

Most of our information is available free of charge for non-commercial purposes like personal study, research, criticism, news reporting and review. All we ask is that you acknowledge Natural England as the owner of the data and abide by our Terms of Use: (103kb)pdf document.

However, if you want to use our information for business or commercial purposes, you’ll need to apply for a commercial licence, see below.

Geographical information on environmental assets where Natural England has the powers to designate and regulate can be freely viewed by all organisations through our product Nature on the Mapexternal link. If you want to download this information and incorporate it within your own products, or if you want to use this information regularly for internal business use, then a commercial licence is required.

Some of our information is derived from other sources, that is, it could be based on underlying intellectual property that belongs to others. Our GIS datasets, for example, are based on underlying mapping data from the Ordnance Survey, so you will need a separate licence from the Ordnance Survey to use such datasets commercially.

Natural England images can be licensed for commercial use, and a project to develop a commercial image library is currently under review.

Commercial licence

If you wish to re-use all or part of Natural England copyright protected information for commercial purposes, including publishing, you will need to apply for a licence. Our Data page will be updated during the first quarter of 2012 to provide details of the datasets that can be used for commercial purposes under the Open Government Licence without you needing to apply for a separate commercial licence.

Applying for a commercial licence will incur an administration charge of £120.

We reserve the right to charge a royalty for commercial reuse of Natural England information in the future. Where charges are introduced, they will be displayed on our internet site And our charges will always be transparent, reasonable and proportionate.
