Our founding legislation gave Natural England a general purpose of ensuring that the natural environment is conserved, enhanced and managed for the benefit of present and future generations.

The natural environment provides us with a wide range of important benefits (ecosystem services) including clean water and air, productive soils, recreational opportunities as well as a source of inspiration. However, increasing pressures on the natural environment are threatening these vital services.
Ensuring that future generations can enjoy England’s rich geological and biological inheritance as well as the wider experience that a healthy, functioning natural environment can provide means that we must continue to improve the protection and management of what we have today.
The following introduce some of the ways we take forward our understanding and activities in support of the conservation and enhancement of the natural environment.
