Malham Tarn NNR

This area consists of a large tarn surrounded by six farms on upland limestone. Some of the farms have meadows rich in wildflowers.

Although most NNRs are managed by Natural England, 88 are wholly or partly managed by other bodies approved by Council, under Section 35 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. 

Malham Tarn NNR is managed by the National Trustexternal link.

Location and access

Malham Tarn is situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Parkexternal link.

The nearest town is Settle, a short distance from the A65 via the B6480. The nearest village is Malham, 4 km to the south of the NNR.

Due to the fragile nature of some of the plant communities, access away from rights of way is by permit only. Contact the National Trust for details by telephoning 01729 830416.

Facilities

The nearest parking, toilet and refreshment facilities are in Malham.

There is limited disabled access to Malham Tarn by prior arrangement with the National Trust (01729 830416). A 200 m boardwalk on the site is suitable for assisted wheelchair use.

There is a bird hide by the tarn with interpretation panels.
