East Dartmoor: how to get there

East Dartmoor NNR is in Devon.

East Dartmoor is approximately 10 km north west of Newton Abbot, situated to the west of the A382 and north of the B3387.

We encourage the use of sustainable transport whenever possible.

By train

The nearest station is Newton Abbot.

By bus

Use Carmel Coaches, service 671, Okehampton to Newton Abbot (via Manaton), Wednesdays only.

Newton Abbot is served by a number of bus, coach and rail links. More information can be found on the DevonLink website.

By car

By car, from Bovey Tracey take the B3387 to Manaton (taking care not to take left fork to Haytor). After about 1.5 miles, you will see the Yarner Wood car park signs on the left. Follow the driveway for 300m to the car park and the NNR office.

There is public car park at Yarner Wood, another on Trendlebere Down, adjacent to the road to Manaton village, and a third at Pullabrook Wood.

On foot

Yarner Wood is on the Templar Way.

Accessibility

The reserve’s large network of paths and tracks caters for all levels of fitness and abilities.

There is a public toilet with disabled facilities located at the Yarner Wood car park.

Dogs are welcome but please respect other visitors, wildlife and livestock by keeping dogs under close control at all times. The bridleways and byways on the reserve are open to horse riders and mountain bikers.

The old Manaton Road, which is now a rugged and challenging by-way, is a great route for mountain bikers . If coming by car, it is best to park at either the Lower or Middle Trendlebere Down cars park and then head into the Bovey Valley.

Facilities

The nearest town to the NNR is Bovey Tracey. The nearest villages are Lustleigh, Moretonhampstead and Manaton. Bovey Tracey has public toilet facilities, as does the Haytor Visitor Centre, run by the Dartmoor National Trust Authority.

There are hotels and hostelries in Bovey Tracey together with a camping and caravan site. Further information is available at the reserve office, where you can find up to date wildlife news, information boards, volunteer opportunities and details of events. Natural England staff are usually on hand to help with enquiries.

The reserve has a new classroom facility at the old Yarrow copper mine and a special schools programme, and also welcomes visits from other community groups.
