Geological Interest

The coastal cliffs and foreshore at Kimmeridge Bay provide the best exposures through the marine clays, shales and thin limestones of the Upper Jurassic (205-142 million years ago) Kimmeridge Clay. The shales yield crushed ammonites, but are best known for their high oil content, which gives the rock a distinct smell. The location gives its name to the Kimmeridgian Stage of the Jurassic, lending the site international significance.
