The yellow, sandy and pebbly sediments exposed in the cliffs at Dunwich belong to the Westleton Beds of the Norwich Crag. These sediments represent the deposits of a coastal gravel beach system some 2 million years old and similar in many respects to the modern-day large shingle structure of Orfordness to the south. The sediments demonstrate that shallow marine conditions prevailed over this part of Suffolk at this time, prior to the onset of the first glacial period of the Ice Age.
