Claverley Road Cutting SSSI, Shropshire, is an example of a permanent road cutting section. The site is a steep-sided cutting, important for the study of Triassic palaeo-environments. The cutting exposes red sandstones of the Wildmoor Sandstone Formation, deposited in the early Triassic, about 243 million years ago. Sedimentary structures in the sandstones indicate deposition by rivers flowing towards the north west. Both the red colour of the sandstone, due to the presence of iron oxides, and the occurrence of pitted sand grains, caused by wind-induced abrasion, indicate an arid environment.
