Railway cutting, exposure site, finite site for certain fossil interests.

Tilton Cutting SSSI, Leicestershire

Tilton Cutting SSSI, Leicestershire, is a disused railway cutting with important exposures of Lower Jurassic sediments. The site is particularly important for palaeontology and has yielded a range of fossil ammonite, brachiopod and gastropod faunas.

The site had become very overgrown over the years and much of the outcrop obscured. In February 2002, English Nature (now Natural England) undertook face clearance and re-profiling of a number of sections on the site, in partnership with the site owners, Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust. Several vertical sections have now been terraced to provide access to higher parts of the section.
