Natural England - Doorstep Greens, Millennium Greens and community greenspace

Doorstep Greens, Millennium Greens and community greenspace

Doorstep Greens and Millennium Greens are examples of community-led regeneration which provide important places for people to enjoy the natural environment close to their homes.

They were inspired by earlier initiatives such as Pocket Parks which started in Northamptonshire in 1984.

The creation of Doorstep Greens and Millennium Greens was supported by the Countryside Agency (now Natural England), the Big Lottery Fund Sustainable Communities programme and other funders between 2001 and 2006.

Opening Green Doors

Information gathered from local communities and the project partners involved in creating Doorstep Greens, along with the findings of an assessment of the Doorstep Greens initiative by The Parks Agency, is summarised in ‘Opening Green Doors: Doorstep Greens and community greenspace’: (1.9mb)pdf document.

This report describes the Doorstep Greens initiative as a catalyst for other community regeneration and the stories from the communities provide an inspiring model for similar community greenspace schemes.
