This register gives an overview of Natural England’s current evidence programme and the evidence produced since 2009. This version was published January 2013 and covers the work currently being undertaken for 2012/2013. Projects are not included in the register until work starts. The next edition of the register is due to be published July 2013.
Our portfolio of evidence and research continues to evolve as we complete work and respond to changing requirements. For information about our evidence strategy, how we identify our evidence needs and our evidence programme work areas see Research and evidence. We welcome feedback and suggestions on how we can improve this register. Please email technicalinformationexchange@naturalengland.org.uk.
For links to details of evidence projects see below: Evidence projects by type | Evidence-based programmes | Evidence projects by designation | Evidence produced.
This section of the register contains information on projects we are currently working on. They can be viewed by project type, by programme or by designation. Projects that form part of a programme will appear under the programme and under the type. Projects will also appear under a designation if they relate to, or are located on, one or more of the designations listed below.
Monitoring projects: our monitoring projects help gather evidence on the state of the natural environment and the way that people engage with it; the impact of interventions on the natural environment and how we shape our future interventions to secure the best impact.
Research projects : our research generates evidence related to our outcomes, or develops and designs approaches to improve our evidence gathering. With limited funding available for research, we must ensure that we target it at our priority evidence needs, working in partnerships and supporting academic research including PhDs. We support PhDs both for the intrinsic value of the work itself and for the opportunities they provide to help develop the next generation of scientists: PhD projects with Natural England funding.
Evaluation projects: these projects use information from both monitoring and research to determine the significance and impact of activities that we carry out or support.
Environmental Stewardship Programmes: the Environmental Stewardship Evidence Programme is managed by Defra and Natural England to evaluate scheme delivery, inform scheme development and fulfil reporting requirements.
Marine Programme : our core marine programme focuses on designating, monitoring and managing Marine Protected Areas, as well as delivering our work on wider marine biodiversity.
Integrated Site Assessment Programme: an integrated programme to monitor the condition of Sites of Special Scientific Interest and the success of Higher Level Stewardship agreements.
Long-term Monitoring Network: is one of the ways that Natural England will understand the effects of climate change, air pollution and land management on the natural environment.
We need evidence to designate new sites and to manage and assess the condition of existing designated sites. The lists below provide information on some of the projects that generate the evidence we need to support our work in these areas.
The links below provide details of some of the evidence generated by our projects since 2009. Where the evidence has been published online there will be an active link. If you would like further information on evidence that does not have an active link please email technicalinformationexchange@naturalengland.org.uk with details of the information you require and include the project ID number.
