National Nature Reserves

One of the functions of National Nature Reserves (NNRs) is to provide places where environmental research and study can take place. The evidence generated may underpin management of the reserve and/or have wider application. Projects are undertaken by staff and volunteers, by university postgraduates and undergraduates, and by consultants, often in conjunction with partner organisations.

Notable projects include RP0316, the development of a long-term monitoring network. The aim of this project is to gather evidence, from across the country, on the effects of climate change, air pollution and land management on the natural environment.  90% of the long-term monitoring network sites are on NNRs.

Many of the NNR projects are small, and some relate to a single species on a specific site. However, together and over time these provide a wealth of data and information. The some of the site specific projects are included in this register to illustrate the range of work that is done on NNRs.
