Natural England has been charged by DEFRA to assist with the implementation of the European Landscape Convention (ELC), which was ratified by the government in March 2007.
The framework for implementing the ELC seeks to further strengthen the protection, management and planning of all landscapes in England, by providing a structure for action plans to be prepared by partners and stakeholders with an interest in landscape issues. Landscape is a vital resource for the East Midlands. It provides the context and setting for settlement and development in the region, as well as nationally and internationally significant landscapes, such as the Peak District National Park.
If landscape is to continue to be a valuable resource for the region, then it is essential that it evolves in a sustainable manner. Our Regional Landscape Scoping Study assesses the current range of approaches to planning and managing landscapes and the drivers of landscape change within the region. It also explores issues relating to sensitivity and capacity, as well as priorities for the regional landscape agenda.
