Natural England - National Character Areas in Yorkshire and the Humber region

National Character Areas in Yorkshire and the Humber region

18 January 2011

Find out how National Character Area descriptions are to be used

Natural England is in the process of updating the descriptions, or profiles, of all the National Character Areas, and drawing up integrated objectives for each of them. Find more information about National Character Areas including maps.

In the Yorkshire & Humber region, drafts have now been compiled for the following NCAs:

36 Southern Pennines

25 North York Moors & Cleveland Hills

39 Humberhead Levels

Drafts for the following NCAs will be available later in February:

30 Southern Magnesian Limestone

37 Yorkshire Southern Pennine Fringe

38 Notts, Derbys & Yorkshire Coalfield

41 Humber Estuary

The remaining 8 NCAs that fall largely or entirely within the region will be completed later in 2011.

The anticipation is that the profiles will provide an improved understanding of the natural environment within each area, and that the objectives enable Natural England to share its strategic aims and aspirations with partners and provide a context for local action. Organisations with an interest in the planning and / or management of the natural environment are being invited to comment on the drafts.
