Farmers and land managers in the Whitby area are invited to a farm event on 23 February 2010.
Farmers and land managers in the Whitby area have an excellent opportunity to learn how to lower costs on their farm at a demonstration event run by the Catchment Sensitive Farming Delivery Initiative in Lealholm on the 23rd February 2010.
The event gives everyone the chance to learn practical ways to make simple and workable changes to their farming practices in order to reduce the potential for diffuse pollution. As an added incentive a free lunch is also being provided.
The event is taking place between 11am and 2pm at Wilks Farm in Lealholm, nr Whitby by kind permission of J H Hutchinson & son. The event is free however to save disappointment please book your place by either phoning the booking line on 0845 602 3864 or email ECSFDI.events@adas.co.uk.
Local farmers and contractors will be giving demonstrations on efficient slurry application, using the latest equipment and methods. There will also be technical presentations looking at the pros and cons of the equipment being demonstrated.
These techniques have helped countless businesses become more cost effective and environmentally friendly by ensuring that the nutrients applied to fields are not exceeding the amount removed by the subsequent crop. This can help avoid nutrient surpluses which leach from fields through drains and run off and flow into river systems. With ever increasing costs this can quite literally be money down the drain.
Natural England’s Catchment Sensitive Farming Officer Sarah Maughan said: ‘With fertilizer use becoming more complex and expensive now is the time to think about ways of using it more efficiently. This event is designed to help farmers make better use of their manures to help ensure their farms are more cost effective and environmentally friendly. And, if you’re in any doubt, we hope the free lunch will encourage you to come along!’
