Climate change & clean energy
Climate change poses the most serious long-term threat to England’s natural environment. The unprecedented rate of climate change and its impacts on already vulnerable landscapes and ecosystems are of critical conservation concern. Formulating effective responses to climate change, its causes and its effects, will be a key strategic priority for Natural England.
In seeking to secure the future of England’s natural environment in a changing climate, Natural England’s focus will be on increasing the ability of landscapes and ecosystems to adapt to climate change and to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas pollution, whilst providing targeted support to Government and wider activities in these fields.
A Natural England priority will be to enhance the role of the natural environment in helping to reduce greenhouse gas pollution. Natural England will aim to deliver this by:
- Supporting increased investment in clean energy technologies or energy reducing measures, by assessing the potential impacts on the natural environment and how these might be avoided.
- Identifying and promoting the role of the natural environment in reducing and removing greenhouse gas pollution, including the role of land managers as carbon managers.
- Leading by example through the choices Natural England makes about energy use, transport and carbon off-sets.
Natural England wants to work with a range of partners to raise awareness of the impacts of climate change on England's wildlife and landscapes and to put into pratice measures which will give wildlife the best chance of survival. See Natural England's Climate Change Campaign.
